Keywords. Categories. Two very powerful words and tools that every author needs to understand. Merchant Words is an awesome tool that can help you find readers on marketplaces like Amazon or Kobo.
If you’re going the self-published route, which I’m guessing you are because you’re reading this blog, you need all the help you can get in finding (and marketing to) your readers. The peeps who’re gonna consume your books each time you hit “publish…”
Of course, this is easier said than done. For some reason, those awesome readers of yours just don’t seem to appear when you want them to. They tend to stay hidden, waiting for a tasty morsel to tempt them before they whip out their credit card and hit ‘buy’!
Finding the right keywords and categories for your books is kinda like finding a needle in a haystack… unless you’ve got access to the right tools that is…
And the tool Steve and I use for our initial keyword research is Merchant Words. At $30 a month, it can be a little on the pricey side, but you can get some nuggets using the tool for free as well.
Before I jump into the tutorial video about Merchant Words, let’s first chat a little more about these pesky keywords.
Why are they so important? Well, unless you’ve been hiding under a rock, it’s all about SEO, search engine optimisation, and at its very essence, that’s all that Amazon is, a search engine. So in order for Amazon to find your book, it displays search results to potential readers (aka buyers) based on the relevancy of your book against the keyword phrase they’ve entered.
To see this in action, make sure you check out the video below.
